INGLESIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL ~ HOME OF THE TROJANS!

SUSD Shares Information with Parents about Grading for Next Year
Parents, please mark your calendars for May 20, 6-7:30 pm, to learn about SUSD grading practices that will be in place next year. In its quest to deliver a world-class education, Scottsdale Unified School District will implement grading practices designed to promote the highest level of academic achievement and personal growth for our students beginning in the 2013-14 school year. Click here for an overview. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Andi Fourlis will host the informational meetings for parents and students to learn more about the changes in grading practices they can expect to see next school year. These meetings on Monday, May 20 will be at the Mohave District Annex, 8500 E. Jackrabbit Rd. Scottsdale, AZ 85250. Parking is on the corner of Jackrabbit and 86th St. Parents and students are encouraged to attend either meeting. In order to adequately prepare for the meeting, please RSVP your attendance to mday@susd.org.

In August of 2012, a committee made up of SUSD K-12 teachers, administrators, parents and high school students was created to review grading practices. The committee's goal was to establish District-wide grading practices that consistently and accurately reflect what students have learned. The committee examined SUSD's current grading practices as well as national research regarding grading issues including:
  • Non-academic factors often included in academic grades (i.e. behavior, work habits, participation, etc.)
  • Meaningful assignments and assessments aligned to academic standards
  • Expectations for homework
  • Value or weight given to various assignments and exams
  • Practices related to extra credit
  • How to increase academic expectations to prepare students for the next level
On April 16, the SUSD Governing Board approved the committee's recommendations. The new guidelines reflect what research shows are the most effective ways to accurately measure and report academic achievement. The changes still allow for professional judgment by teachers, but the judgments will be guided by practices that maximize accuracy, consistency and fairness for students. The changes are designed to increase academic rigor by creating a K-12 focus on student proficiency of academic standards and course outcomes. This system will better prepare our students for the next grade level by ensuring a solid foundation of knowledge and skills.
SUSD teachers and administrators began learning about the new practices in April, and are dedicating the afternoon of May 8 to extend their knowledge. Their learning will continue throughout the 2013-14 school year.

Additional opportunities for parents and students to learn more about the new grading practices will be offered throughout the 2013-14 school year beginning with Back to School nights . We encourage you to learn more at your child's school, or electronically. Print and electronic materials will be available in August 2013 in the Digital Backpack. Ten informational meetings about the K-12 changes will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. prior to the Superintendent's evening office hours at each high school each semester. Specific dates will be posted to the SUSD website in August 2013. This information will be e-mailed to all parents from the District office on April 26, May 2, May 9 and May 16.

TekLink Initiative Connecting Families, Schools, and Communities with Recycled, Refurbished Technology

Scottsdale Unified School District’s TekLink program refurbishes and reimages older District computers and other donated computers to distribute to families who have been selected by principals, community specialists and teachers. A cooperative communication within the learning community determines the number of computers to be distributed at each school. All District computers will remain the property of Scottsdale Unified School District. At the discretion of the Principal, donated computers will be distributed for one school year with a $20 deposit.

If you would like to like to donate your old laptops, computer towers or monitors to the TekLink program, please drop the item off at any school or the Education Center, 3811 N. 44th St., Phoenix 85018. TekLink can accept monitors, keyboards, mice and computers 2004 or newer. Older items will be ethically recycled. Donations are tax deductible.

ATTENDANCE

The following provides specific attendance requirements for the state of Arizona and Scottsdale Unified School District. Please click on the links for more specific information.

Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is committed to regular attendance as the key to much of the success a student may gain from his/her educational program.  It is the responsibility of the school to keep parents/guardians informed of actions that might have a detrimental effect upon the educational growth of individual students.
In compliance with state and local laws, policies, and procedures, please be aware of SUSD’s attendance policies (policies can be viewed at this link).  Specifically, Arizona state law says that it is unlawful for any child between the ages of six and sixteen to fail to attend school during the hours school is in session, unless exempt due to extenuating circumstances as outlined in A.R.S. 15-802, 15-803

Please help your child get to school each day and make sure that all absences are called in (480-484-4900) prior to the start of school, otherwise please expect to get an automated call reporting your child(ren) absence

Thank you, in advance, for helping us to preserve the learning environment at Ingleside Middle School.

HOW TO SCHEDULE A PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE

Parents are invited and encouraged to schedule a conference at any time during the year to discuss concerns, progress, or just to “check-in.” The procedure for scheduling a conference is as follows:

Group Conference
If you would like to schedule a conference with all of your child’s teachers at once, you may call the school office to leave a message for your child’s teachers to contact you. Or you may email your child's teachers. Teachers will return your call / email and schedule the conference at a time that is convenient for you and the group of teachers to meet.

Individual Class Concerns
If you have a question or concern about a certain subject area, call the school office and leave a message for the individual teacher. Or email that teacher.

Other Communication
Students and parents are encouraged to visit the web sites of the core and enrichment teachers.
A list of teachers and their telephone extensions can be found on the Staff Directory web page, as well as a link to the teacher's web site and his/her email address.
